Integrating telematics with operational data to streamline and optimize Road Freight operations

Carriers play a fundamental role in world trade. Every day, millions of freight deliveries by road, air, and sea fulfill the needs and dreams of the human race. To meet these demands, carriers rely heavily on telematics data, which includes vital information such as vehicle speed, coordinates (latitude/longitude), fuel consumption, and distance traveled. However, the telematics data alone is often insufficient for comprehensive operational management.

Today, Meight is excited to announce the fusion of telematics data into the Meight Platform, addressing the inefficiencies and gaps faced by carriers in their daily operations. The challenges of using Telematics alone

Road Freight companies typically rely on telematics providers to gather essential data for various tasks, including:

1. Providing customer updates on freight estimated time to arrival (ETA).
2. Monitoring the locations of vehicles, trailers, and drivers to optimize freight assignment.
3. Analysing fuel consumption and distance traveled for each freight.
4. Managing driving hours to ensure compliance with rest requirements and determining driver eligibility for new assignments.

However, each of these tasks requires more than just raw telematics data; operational context is crucial. Some examples:

1. Providing ETA updates:
   • Telematics data provides current vehicle locations, but calculating ETA requires knowing the vehicle’s destination.
   • Location data from telematics doesn’t indicate which cargo is being transported neither for which customer.
2. Optimising Freight assignments:
   • While telematics data shows locations of all vehicles/trailers/drivers, it lacks information on the pickups and deliveries for ongoing freights.
3. Fuel and distance analysis:
   • Telematics reports on fuel consumption and distance traveled, but not between specific freight stops. The problem grows in complexity and time if a freight is picked by one vehicle and delivered by another.
4. Managing driving hours:
   • Telematics measures legal driving hours but doesn’t evaluate this with upcoming freight pickups or deliveries to inform which driver might be better suited to do the job.

As a result, freight managers often face the cumbersome process of manually cross-referencing telematics data with operational data to make informed decisions, communicate with their customers or subcontractors!!
